Dr Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. With a background in medicine, psychology, anthropology, philosophy and education, she was perfectly placed to develop her unique approach to teaching and learning.
It all started when she worked with a group of underprivileged children in Rome and got some incredible and transformative results. To me, the methods she used then and developed further are just as relevant and effective now as they were all those years ago. In fact Maria Montessori’s enduring and remarkable legacy is that she’s still making a positive difference to the lives of children and adults all around the world today - and that’s something I really admire.
Central to Montessori philosophy is to respect each child as an individual and support their natural development from birth to adulthood. It seeks to enable children to reach their full potential as independent, creative and intelligent individuals who can make a really positive contribution to society. It’s an inspiring child-led approach where the teacher is the guide and the child the active learner - a mini scientist.
Gently encouraging your child to explore and understand their surroundings, using all their senses and going at their own pace, satisfies their own innate desire to learn. Within a prepared Montessori environment, that I can help you create, there becomes no need for either praise or punishment as a tool for learning. There’s no pushing to reach development milestones before your child is ready.
Instead, when your child’s self-motivation is supported and their natural desire to explore and discover is nurtured, these milestones are achieved in a way that’s free from adult or peer pressure. This in turn leads to calm, confident, communicative children who love learning. They are strong in character and as happy in their own company as in a group - and with adults and children alike. And they have empathy and compassion – as aware of others needs as their own.
Montessori children also grow up to think clearly and logically, and can concentrate on tasks for long periods of time with great focus and determination. I think this is a particularly valuable skill to have in the 21st century with all its hi-tech distractions.
Montessori believed that children pass through several phases as they grow to adulthood that she called ‘Planes of Development’. The first phase from birth to six years old is ‘Infancy’ and it’s this age group that I specialize in.
It’s a very special age when children are able to absorb like a sponge all sorts of cultural information and important life skills without even thinking about it – language and customs, habits and knowledge about the world. Montessori called this soaking up of information in the first six years of life the ‘Absorbent Mind’.
Tapping into this and supporting children to reach their full potential by providing them with an imaginative, rich and ordered environment is where my passions lie and I would love to help you learn how to achieve this for your own child or children using Montessori Methods.
From my own experience teaching Montessori in nurseries as well as at home with my daughter, I have found Dr Maria’s approach to early years education inspirational, fascinating and fun – and so could you! Whilst I use a range of beautiful Montessori toys and learning materials that you too could buy if you wished, I also create many of own at little or no cost and can show you how to do this - as well as teach you the purpose behind them all. And I’ll be able to give you advice on how to use the Montessori philosophy to deal with all sorts of situations you’ll come across with your own little one at different ages.
